Mannequin Training:
Goal Keeper Training

Greetings Coach!

Goal Keepers are your last line of defense and can be worth their weight in gold. A good GK will save your team goals and will win you games! GK training can be a challenge as team and field player training is often mistakenly our priority. Listed below are a few ways to enhance your GK training using a minimum of resources. Use injured players, assistant coaches, team managers or extra GK's if you are on a tight schedule with limited resources.

Goal Keeper Warm Up

Simple yet effective. Place 1, 2 or 3 Mannequins in front of your Keeper. Begin the Warm up with easy tosses left and right and over the Mannequins. Advance to more aggressive tosses and balls tossed low and in front. Instruct your Keeper to prevent the low balls from touching the ground.

Your Keeper must concentrate on the ball while using his peripheral vision and footwork to move around the life sized obstacles.

Deflection / Reaction Training

Nothing is more painful than seeing a slow rolling deflection cross your goal line with your GK and defenders frozen and bewildered.

Improve your Keeper's reactions by placing The Soccer Wall Training Mannequins in front of the goal, creating deflections. Improve your GK's reaction speed. And, save your team a deflection goal!

Crosses

Does you GK control his box? Timing and judgement are important talents that will prevent scoring opportunities and save goals. Adding a realistic and match like element by placing The Soccer Wall Mannequins in your GK's 6 yard box for service training will pay dividends and reduce goals against.

1v1 / Angle Training

Getting off the line at the right moment, cutting the attackers angle while placing pressure on the attacker will make scoring difficult for even the best of goal scorers. Use your Soccer Wall Training Mannequins to teach and train your Goal Keepers on the advantages of stepping off the goal line and shrinking the scoring space as the attacking player approaches.

Start the attacker 10 yards from the mannequin placement. Place one mannequin in the line between the near post and the ball from where the attacker is expected to shoot. Place the other mannequin in the line between the far post and the ball where the attacker is expected to shoot.

Make it clear to your GK that they will only have to cover the space between the mannequins. The closer they get to the attacker the less lateral distance they will have to cover. (Attackers are instructed to cooperate as this is a GK training exercise.)

Your GK will quickly learn the advantages of getting off his line!

Free Kick Training

GK positional training on Free Kicks is vital. A Free Kick Wall is organized to eliminate the easy shot to the near side of the goal. Our GK's must protect the far side while anticipating a shot over or around The Wall. Your GK must strongly consider the shooter attacking the near side of the goal with a well placed Free Kick.

Use The Soccer Wall Slip covers to block your GK's view creating a match like challenge to overcome. Shooters will consider a shot to the GK's side (far side) of the goal if the GK is cheating or too far to the middle. You can reduce this option by having a defender stand 10 yards from the ball, between the ball and the back post. (Slightly inside of the imaginary line created by the ball and the back post. Creating a 1 man wall blocking a back post shot.) Also consider instructing your Keeper to position him or herself to offer the illusion that the back post is well covered and a ridiculous option. Then just before the kick, they can quickly reposition themselves to cover the shot over The Wall.
