European Mannequin Training:
Striker Training
Greetings Coach!
Welcome to the October 2005 edition of
European Mannequin Training, The Soccer
Wall Company's mannequin training newsletter.
Use The Soccer Walls training mannequins to improve
team and individual training. This month we will
concentrate on Striker training. Now, not only will
your team score more goals on Free Kicks but your
Strikers will be better prepared to add to those goals
during the normal course of play.
1v1 Fakes and Feint Training

Start your Striker training with a simple 1v1
excercise. Your Strikers can practice various fakes,
feints, timing etc... while attacking a life like figure.
Add a goal to incorporate ball striking and finishing
techniques.
Receiving, Turning and Finishing
Playing with back to goal is a requirement for every
good Striker. Train your Strikers to receive in a
variety of ways. Inside of the foot, outside of the
foot, with a quick fake etc... Have them receive balls
from different angles. Have them receive balls on the
ground and in the air. Limit their touches and
encourage a quick turn and a quick shot on goal.
Receive, 1 Touch, Spin and Finish
Train your Strikers to lose their defender. In this
excercise the Striker must check off, receive the ball
from a teammate, return the pass with 1 touch and
quickly spin around the defender in anticipation of a
pass into space. Teammate also plays 1 touch into
the space. Striker finish's with a shot on goal.
Often Strikers will spin incorrectly or not at all and
the timing and pace of their passes may be
inconsistant. Through repitition, your Strikers will
learn to lose their defender while attacking the
valuable space behind your opponents defense.
Drift Away
Top Strikers drift wide of the their defender when
they are in a tight area and near or in the penalty
box with the ball close by. Drifting wide while facing
the field will create a space to receive the ball facing
the goal. If the defender stays to protect the
central space the Striker is free. If the defender
follows the Striker, a space is created for the Striker
to receive a through ball. Teach your Strikers the
technique of drifting wide, receiving, with their first
touch, away from defensive pressure and their
second touch a shot on goal. Or, they can receive a
thru ball and shoot directly.
Thru Ball
Nothing is more deadly to a defense than a well
timed run and a properly paced thru ball. Nothing is
more difficult to get on the end of, due to the
improper vision or timing of your Strikers runs and the
vision or touch of those playing the thru ball.
Use your training mannequins to replicate this
scenario and prepare them for this defense breaking
opportunity.
Finishing Serves
Nothing is more frustrating than watching your
opponents defenders clear out quality serves. Too
often Strikers begin their runs too early and end up in
front of the goal or waiting for the ball as the
opposing defender catches up to them.
Now, you have passive defender mannequins
to help your Strikers. Place them in the box and
clean up the timing of your Strikers runs. The
Soccer Wall training Mannequins will also improve the
accuracy of your servers crosses.
Beating a Flat Back 4
Todays modern defensive schemes are difficult to
penetrate. Coordinated play of your strikers is key in
breaking down your opponents flat back 4. Simulate
the shape of a back 4 with The Soccer Wall. Train
your strikers by developing co-ordinated patterns
and well timed runs that will stretch and break your
opponents organized shape.
Create patterned combinations thru the back 4 as
part of your finishing training.
